The Success-ometer App

Posted: January 28, 2014 in New Media

I have made further developments to the Success-ometer by adding two more screens. This makes it look more comprehensive in how it would work, and also gives an aspect of interaction.

to it. Below is the sequence the screens follow:

In order of sequence: App Button, Instruction Screen, Question Screen and Success-ometer.

Success-ometer Design

Posted: January 20, 2014 in New Media

Here is a design I came up with for the success-ometer app, manipulating the requirement of an industrial dial format quite effectively. The colours I used are pretty self-explanatory in its context, using red as an indication of warning or generally bad, and green, vice-versa. The gradual desaturation of the colours from one to five represent the decline in performance. I thought this was a rather effective way of showing this.

As for the background, I wanted something rather bright but simplistic, as to not overpower the application itself. A gradient green seemed to work quite nicely. Also, to ensure that the green buttons did not blend in to the background, I added a soft drop shadow to each of them so they would stand out clearly.

I also designed a button for the app, inspired by the Adobe CS5 software products.

Success-ometer App Target Audience

Posted: January 14, 2014 in New Media

Regarding the design of this app, I will have to consider certain aspects based on the target audience such as colour scheme, typography and configuration/layout.

The given target audience for this brief is based on individuals aged between 15 to 20 years. This means that the design can either have an overall sophisticated or simplistic format.

Recent Developments in Social Media

Google’s roster of innovators recently gathered to present on topics such as advancements within Google Plus, the advancement of Google maps and the new Google platform for app developers.

Hugo Barra, the VP Product Management of Android, examines the massive potential available within the Android market for app developers. With over 900 million Android users, the opportunities for cross-platform apps is bigger than ever.

Telling Stories with Facebook Open Graph.

Open Graph lets apps tell stories on Facebook through a structured, strongly typed API.

People use stories to share the things they’re doing, the people they’re doing them with and the places where they happen. Open Graph lets you integrate apps deeply into the Facebook experience, which increases engagement, distribution and growth. Publishing stories drives engagement and interest in your app. People can comment on their friends’ stories and start a conversation.

Google Services

Screen Shot 2014-01-09 at 06.19.30 Google offers a variety of services that help you build new revenue streams, manage app  distribution, track app usage, and enhance your app with features such as maps, sign-in, and  cloud messaging.

Although these Google services are not included in the Android platform, they are supported by  most Android-powered devices. When using these services, you can distribute your app on Google Play to all devices running Android 2.2 or higher, and some services support even more devices.

Location-based Services

Location Services (LCS) use the (geographical) location of mobile user equipment (UE) to offer a range of value added services to consumer and enterprise users.

Location Based technologies offer MNOs the opportunity to deliver contextual services. As such services are specifically orientated towards the position of the mobile handset it enables MNOs to provide services that are more targeted and effective.

Regarding the relevance to the design brief, Social Media could have definite potential for the FRC app. Each aspect covered within the research of this post could be incorporated in to this app. Google Maps and GPS could prove very helpful in helping students find the location of whatever campus they study at. As for Facebook, its extensive daily use by so many people, Open Graph may be a sufficient means of communication with fellow students and even tutors.

Hyperlocal media – online news, content and services pertaining to a town, postcode or other geographically confined community.

Ofcom estimate that nine out of ten UK adults regularly consume some form of local news, information or other content through television, radio, newspapers or the internet. Further, in-depth research commissioned by Nesta has demonstrated the growing use and demand for hyperlocal media with the majority of adults in the UK interested in news and information about the immediate area in which they currently live and 45% of all adults having accessed some form of hyperlocal media. Key to driving this market is the increasing take-up of connected mobile devices, such as tablets and smartphones – more than half of those who report a higher usage of hyperlocal media report do so over such devices.

The More Targeted Your Content Is, the Better.
Your content should be focused on your industry as well as your geographical location if you are a location-based business. And don’t just focus on your state, but also the specific cities and areas where your customers are concentrated. This process can also allow you to take advantage of current events as they happen.
Find out what’s going on in your industry right now. Google News Alerts and Twitter are two great sources to find out what’s trending in your area.
Because hyper-local is referred to as ‘a new paradigm’ , I haven’t found a great deal of information on the subject matter. However, what I have found on hyper-local media has relevance to this project, and to me seems enough to progress forward.
